East Acton Primary School "Growing Together"

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

The role of the governing body is a strategic one; its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

Our current school priorities for 2017-18 are:

  1. To develop a more systematic whole school “Mastery Approach” to the teaching of mathematics.
  2. Ensure most able pupils, including most able disadvantaged pupils, exceed expected standards in mathematics by providing them with the opportunities to deepen their learning.
  3. Continue to embed the use of assessment systems to track performance and inform next steps ensuring high attainment and strong progress across the school.
  4. Continue to promote a love of reading with an emphasis on reading for meaning.
  5. Continue to drive up standards in writing attainment across the school.

Below is some information about the individual members of our school governing body.  If you have time available and are interested in becoming a governor, please contact the school.

Andrew Hackett - Co-opted Governor and Chair of Governors - Inclusion Link Governor

I am the Chair of Governors, having taken the role on in December 2016, and have been a co-opted governor since September 2013. My term of office ends on 31st August 2018. I am a civil servant at the Department for Education, currently working as a policy adviser in the Standards and Testing Agency. I am a keen football player and fan, an avid reader and have a particular interest in history.

Jon Westall - Co-opted Governor & Vice Chair  - Child Protection Link Governor

I am the Vice Chair of Governors and a Co-opted governor.  I have been a governor for 8 years. My current term of office expires on 31st August 2018. I used to be a teacher and have been a governor for two other schools outside London and so have an on-going interest in local education.  I am on the finance and premises and Teaching and Standards committees.  I am the vicar of St Dunstan, East Acton.  I play a bit of 5 a side football, grow vegetables and enjoy reading.

Jenny Clark - Local Authority Governor - Science Link Governor

Stephen Pearce - Headteacher Governor

I have been the Headteacher of East Acton Primary School since September 2015.  I am on both governing body committees and attend all meetings of the governing body.  I joined East Acton Primary in January 2009 as an Assistant Head then later became one of the Deputy Headteachers before taking on my current role.  Previously I worked in two large primary schools in Brent and before that I taught in Australia in Brisbane and in Coolum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.  I was born in the UK but grew up in Australia - I have lived in the UK since 1995.

As Headteacher, I work alongside the Governing Body and the rest of the Leadership Team to promote and maintain the positive and supportive ethos of East Acton Primary whilst striving to move East Acton from good to outstanding in all areas.

Adina El Masry - Staff Governor - Health & Safety Link Governor

My name is Adina El Masry and I am a Staff Governor and I am on the Finance and Curriculum Committees. I was a parent governor for 21 years and have been a staff governor for 2 years.

My 5 children attended East Acton Primary and I used to volunteer when work permitted. When a parent governor vacancy became available I wanted to contribute something back to the school and become more involved. In fact this led me to become a teacher when I changed careers. When I came to East Acton as a teacher I became a staff governor when a vacancy became available.

I am the nursery teacher at East Acton Primary. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, visiting museums and art galleries, reading and listening to music. My hobbies are cake decorating, making jewellery and painting water colours.

Naomi Oliver - Co-opted Governor

I am a Co-opted Governor and have been a member of the Governing Body for 11 years. My term of office ends on 31st August 2018.

I am a member of the Finance and Premises Committees.  I became a Governor because I had 2 children at East Acton Primary from 1991 to 2003 and wanted to contribute to the school and the local community.

As well as being a Governor,  I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant at East Acton Primary.  I have been working at the school for 13 years and currently work in year 6.  I am a life-long learner as I have just completed a Foundation Degree in Primary Teaching and Learning.

Mirjana Zivanovic - Co-opted Governor - Maths Link Governor

I have been a governor of East Acton Primary School for a number of years.  I am a Co-opted Governor and recently became Maths Governor. My term of office ends on 31st August 2018. I live locally and know many children who attend the school.  I have visited the school a number of times and have always enjoyed my visits.  Every time, children and members of staff make me most welcome.  Being a governor of this school is a very rewarding experience.

Rashidat Yusuf - Parent Governor - Sports Premium Link Governor

I am a parent governor and was elected in January 2015. My term of office ends in January 2019.

I became a governor because I have a son in who attends the school and I am very keen to be part of his education and to contribute to the school.

As well as being a parent governor, I work full time for East London Mental Health Trust as a Sports Therapist.  I enjoy taking part in different types of physical activities such as playing Volleyball, Badminton and long distance running.

Wendy Sharp - Co-opted Governor and Equalities Link Governor

Since becoming a parent, my children have attended nine different schools and nurseries in three different countries. I have experienced a variety of educational models and been part of several school communities. I have had three children attend East Acton Primary, with just one child still a student in KS2 now. My studies at university were in science and then scientific communications and I now work as an editor at a medical journal that specialises in global health. I also work occasionally as a recipe writer for a television programme in Australia and I have co-authored two cookbooks.  I am a co-opted governor and began my role at East Acton Primary in 2015. I am also a member of the Curriculum and Standards Committee.  I believe wholeheartedly in the school’s vision to help every child achieve their highest potential and I feel lucky to serve the children of East Acton Primary as a governor.
