East Acton Primary School "Growing Together"

Governors

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

Governors' Role

The role of the governing board is a strategic one; its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

Structure of the Governing Board

At East Acton Primary the Governing Board meets each half term as a full group rather than following a separate committee structure.  In this way, school issues relating to areas such as finance, premises, curriculum and standards are shared across all members of the governing board.  This allows all governors to maintain a thorough understanding of these aspects and how they are interrelated.  Separate pay or appraisal committees meet at different times of the year, as well as other working groups as required.

School Improvement Priorities 2023-24:

  1. To establish effective SEND provision
  2. To improve attainment and writing progress in Writing in all year groups
  3. To establish formative assessment strategies for all foundation subjects
  4. To achieve the Rights Respecting Silver Award.

Jenny Clark - Vice Chair of Governors - Co-opted Governor - Science Link Governor

I joined the Governing Board in 2017. I became a governor as I am interested in the improvement of primary school education.

I work as a Finance Business Partner at the BBC looking after large budgets in the News division and would like to use my financial knowledge to help East Acton school. I live locally and have 2 children both now at senior school. I was very involved in their primary school as a parent and now find it interesting to be involved in another school as a governor.

Melanie Tyndall - Headteacher Governor

I have been the Headteacher of East Acton Primary School since May 2022 but have been at this school since September 2003.  I joined East Acton Primary as a class teacher and then later became a phase leader and member of the Senior Leadership Team. In 2016 I  became one of the Deputy Headteachers with the responsibility for Teaching & Learning before taking on my current role.

As Headteacher, I work alongside the Governing Board and the rest of the Leadership Team to ensure the children at East Acton make strong progress from their starting points and achieve well, with access to a broad and balanced curriculum.  As a leadership team we promote and maintain the positive and supportive ethos of East Acton Primary whilst striving to move the school from good to outstanding in all areas.

Naomi Cole - Staff Governor

I  have been a member of the Governing Board for 11 years. I became a Governor because I had 2 children at East Acton Primary from 1991 to 2003 and wanted to contribute to the school and the local community.  As well as being a Governor,  I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant at East Acton Primary.  I have been working at the school for 13 years and currently work in year 6.  I am a life-long learner as I have just completed a Foundation Degree in Primary Teaching and Learning.

Suzi Ahferom - Parent Governor

I am a parent governor with a daughter at East Acton Primary School. I joined the Governing Board in January 2019.  I decided to become a parent governor in order to have a better understanding of the educational system and to contribute to the strategic plans of the School.

My previous background includes working in digital marketing for media agencies and within the retail sector.  I am excited to bring the perspective of the parents to the Governing Board and to support the hard-working staff to ensure the school meets its goals. But most importantly that we assist in laying the foundations for the pupils to succeed.

Ammara Sadiq - Co-opted Governor

East Acton Primary is a small school where people are warm and welcoming towards each other. For this reason I try to help my son, with the help of other parents and teachers, set up a Biryani stall at the school’s annual International day and Summer fair. I think it is important for parents to help children with their studies and to encourage them to participate in extracurricular activities. When a vacancy for a parent governor came up in July 2018, I decided to join the governing body. I joined as an associate member and have been a co-opted governor since Dec 2019. I currently have two children studying at East Acton.

I always felt a keen interest in the education sector. Before formally joining it in 2008, I used to voluntarily teach Maths and Economics. My work experience includes teaching Economics at a private university and AS Level Economics at an independent college. Currently I am working with children with special needs at an Islamic school in Northwood on Saturdays. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, reading, weight training and teaching young children about religion.

As governor at East Acton Primary I enjoy being part of a team that is committed to the progress and betterment of the school. It feels like a great responsibility but also a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated group of people. I would like nothing more than to see the school grow from strength to strength in the coming months and years.

James Perryman - Parent Governor

I have two sons at East Acton Primary.  I decided to become a parent governor to support the hard work the school is already doing and to try to provide an alternative perspective where possible.

I work in Social Housing, in Service Improvement, which involves reviewing policies and working processes.  I hope this experience will help at East Acton Primary.  Outside of work I am also a keen musician and once played at Sydney Opera House.  I think encouraging children to grow and develop in the arts and their personal expression is really important.

Joshua Smith - Co-opted Governor

I joined the Governing Board in July 2023.  I live locally and have two young children.  I hope to be able to contribute to primary education in the area.

I work in the financing and development of infrastructure projects and have a master degree in mathematics.

Ned Mazhar - Co-opted Governor

I joined the Governing Board in October 2023. As a parent to 2 primary school aged children, I am passionate about playing a part in shaping the next generation and making schooling more inclusive.  I also have over 4 years experience of being a school governor in the London Borough of Ealing. This has enabled me to deepen my understanding of the schooling system, the primary curriculum, and the challenges faced by state schools.

I have spent most of my career working in central government on UK policy issues ranging from international trade to food labelling. Like being a civil servant, I see being a school governor as a very rewarding way to make a difference in society
