  • We will be thinking about how we need to look after animals and how we take care of ourselves.

Communication & Language and Literacy

  • We will be reading Old MacDonald had a farm and learning to read and write some animal names.
  • We will also be practising our tricky words.

Mathematics

  • We will be learning about our important times of the day and what these look like on a clock.

 

 

Understanding the world

  • We will be thinking about our new topic, down at the farm and discussing what we already know about the farm.
  •  

Physical development

  • We will be doing P.E. on Tuesday- please remember to bring in P.E. kits.

Expressive arts and design

  • We will be making animal pictures and farmer footprints.

Topic for next week: My little star/ Chinese New year

 

Personal, social and emotional development

  • To talk about how we must always be kind to all the friends in our class and make sure that we make each other feel better if we see that somebody is sad.
  •  

Communication & language and Literacy

  • We are going to be reading a story called ‘My little star’.
  • We will be describing stars and talking about what else is high up in the sky.

Mathematics

  • We are going to learn capacity vocabulary.
  • We are going to explore and experiment with water and different containers.
  •  

Understanding the world

  • We will be learning about and celebrating Chinese New Year on Monday.

Physical development

  • Please make sure you child has their full PE kit ready for Tuesday.

Expressive arts and design

  • We are going to be making constellation finders using kitchen roll tubes.

 

We would greatly appreciate any kitchen roll tubes you can collect at home. We need as many as we can get to make our constellation finders on Friday.

Book for next week: Q Pootle 5 (An alien story book)

Personal, social and emotional development

  • To talk about how we must always be kind to all the friends in our class and make sure that we make each other feel better if we see that somebody is sad.
  • To remember to use our inside voices in the classroom.

 

Communication & language and Literacy

  • We are going to be reading a story called ‘Q Pootle 5’.
  • We will be writing sentences with one adjective in. e.g. The alien is slimy.

Mathematics

  • We will be learning how to add and take away numbers.
  • We will be practising how to write number sentences.

 

Understanding the world

  • We are going to continue learning about space.

 

Physical development

  • Many children do not have their PE kits. This is disappointing as they are unable to join in with activities unless they have their full PE kit. Please make sure children have it ready for Tuesday.
  • We will be considering what foods and drink are healthy for us and how to look after our bodies.

Expressive arts and design

  • We are going to make alien pictures using a variety of materials .

  • We are going to be reading a story about a man called Bob who is the man on the moon.
  • We will be looking at features of a letter.
  • We will be writing letters.

  • We will be learning about how to describe different sizes & weights using vocabulary such as bigger, smaller, lighter, heavier, greater, shorter and longer.

Understanding the world

  • We are going to continue learning about space.

We are going to continue with a range of Christmas activities next week. The following information is about our first week back in January. This is going to be the last Reception newsletter of the term.

Topic for first week backBob the man on the Moon

Personal, social and emotional development

  • We will be reminding ourselves of the classroom rules and how we need to behave whilst we are at school.

 

Communication & language and Literacy

  •  We are going to be reading a story about a man called Bob who is the man on the moon. 

 

Mathematics

  • We will be learning about how to describe different sizes & weights using vocabulary such as bigger, smaller, lighter, heavier, greater, shorter and longer.

Understanding the world

  • We are going to be learning all about Space next term so we are going to watch some videos of space to help us talk about what we already know.   

Physical development

  • Please make sure you child has their full PE kit ready for Tuesday.

Expressive arts and design

  • We are going to talk about different things we could make this term to reflect our Space topic. We will then use some of these ideas to inform our planning and develop a Space display for our classroom.

We have given your child a homework pack to ensure they continue to practise their numbers and phonic sounds throughout the holidays. It is very important that children continue to spend at least 15 minutes daily engaged in some sort of learning activity so they do not fall behind. We hope you find the pack helpful. Next week’s homework is included within this pack.

 

This will be the last newsletter for this term however please remember that school will continue next week as normal. Children will break up for the holidays on  21th December at 1.30pm.

Topic for next week:  St Andrews & Advent        

 

Personal, social and emotional development

  • We will be making sure we use our indoor voices when we are in the classroom. It is important for us to remember this as it can disturb other children’s learning if we are playing too loudly.

 

Communication & language and Literacy

  • We are going to be learning about St Andrews day and Advent.
  • We are going to be making and labelling a Scottish flag to celebrate St Andrews day.
  • We are going to learn all about the Christmas story.

 

Mathematics

  • We will be learning about 2d and 3d shapes.

  • We will be talking about who celebrates Christmas and what some of the traditions are during this time of year.

  • We will be making sure that we are following classroom rules at all times.

 

Communication & language and Literacy

  • We are going to watch a video about carnivals and think of describing words.
  • We are going to use these words to read a simple sentence about carnivals.

 

Mathematics

  • We will be learning about 2d and 3d shapes. 

 

Understanding the world

  • We will be learning about carnivals and how they are colourful events.    
  • We will be learning about the Christmas story and preparing for our show.

  • We are going to begin practising for the Christmas performance. Details of the show have been announced on the main school’s newsletter.   

 

 

We would like to ask all Parents and Carers to ask their child about the school day in order to develop their speaking and listening skills. Encourage your child to include as much detail as possible when answering and ensure they are speaking in full sentences when they are talking. This will support oral sentence structure which will then be of help to your child when it comes to writing sentences.

  • Next week is anti-bullying week; we will be thinking about what bullying is and how we can stop it. We will be completing activities throughout the week to show what we have learnt.

Communication & language and Literacy

Next week will we will be reading the book ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne.

 

Mathematics

We will be learning the names of 3d shapes and their properties.

We will have a range of everyday 3d objects.

Party hat, presents, chocolate roll.

As a class we will identify shapes and discuss some of their properties.

 

Understanding the world

  • We will role-play setting up a party, getting dressed up, wrapping presents, giving gifts, playing party games, eating food and giving cake and singing happy birthday.

 

Physical development

  • We will be changing for PE from this week. Please make sure you child has their full PE kit ready for Tuesday.

Expressive arts and design

  • We are going to be making our own wrapping paper.

 

Please continue to practise phonic sounds with children at home. We have daily sessions to read and write sounds ensuring that they are formed correctly. We move on to supporting children read and write simple words once they are confident with their sounds. Please encourage and support children with this at home where possible. 

 

In addition we are practising how to write numbers 1-20. Please ensure children spend time doing this at home.

  • We will be talking about how we can be kind to our friends. What sorts of things could we do to achieve this?

 

Communication & language and Literacy

  • We will be read a story called ‘Handa’s Surprise’.
  • The story is set in Africa so we will be writing a list about things we may need in Africa.
  • We will pretend to go on a trip to Kenya.

Mathematics

  • We will be practising counting up to 20 and matching to correct numbers.
  • We will be sharing objects into equal groups.

 

Understanding the world

  • We will be looking at African animals and discussing colour and pattern.

We are going to give your child homework. This consists of phonic sounds or words to practise writing, your child’s name which they have to trace over and rewrite on the yellow dotted lines below and  maths sheets. Homework will be given in homework folders which must be returned with completed homework every Wednesday. New homework will be given every Friday.

  • We will talk to the children about the patterns on the pads of their fingers, telling them that the patterns are called fingerprints.

I'm very excited about the year to come and looking forward to the experiences and the learning we are all going to share. We have really enjoyed our first week at school! The rules and routines have all been explained to the children and they have all adapted really well into school life.
