English/ICT

This week, we have began learning to Touch Type, the skill of typing on a keyboard, quickly, without looking at the keys. This is a highly useful skill and will be hugely beneficial in later life. Because of its importance, I ask the children to practice their touch typing instead of their spelling homework. Please use the links below to play touch typing games and improve those typing skills.

Maths

In maths, we have begun preparations for The Mayor's Fund for London- Count on Us Primary Challenge. This is a maths competition entered by over a hundred schools in London. Teams are made up of three children, who compete in maths challenges involving tangrams, pentominoes, The 24 Game and Code-breaking. These challenges are fantastically fun and really help to develop the children's maths skills. I will place some links below, as well as a video, so you can know more about the competition and each of the challenges. Please practice and enjoy at home. laugh

Count on Us Primary Challenge Sept 2016

Count on Us is the Mayor's Fund for London's numeracy programme. We work with schools to help young Londoners reach greater attainment levels in numeracy. The programme aims to make maths fun and improve confidence around learning as well as improving academic attainment, ultimately improving life chances and helping young people make a positive contribution to society.

Topic

We have been learning about the Water Cycle in topic lessons this half term. This links really well with our Science topic, States of Matter. I have placed some links below which will help you to learn more about his at home. Look out for levels of precipitation (rain/snow/hail) over the coming weeks. You could make a record of the weather and plot it on a graph or make a chart. Also look out for changes in states of matter around the house. Cooking is perfect for this.

Natural History Museum Trip - 21.10.16

On the last day of this half term, Thursday 20th October, Maple Class visited the Natural History Museum. It was a really fun day and I feel the class learnt a lot. We learnt about many different types of animals, including dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, reptiles and creepy crawlies.

We also took part in a 'Cutting Edge Workshop'. In this workshop the children got to handle real animal skulls, checking out their teeth in order to analyse what their diets might be. The children were wonderful at this and demonstrated a fantastic understanding of teeth, animal types and their diets- all of which we have learnt about in science lessons.

The children were fantastically well behaved and I cannot wait to take them on their next trip! Check out the pictures below.

Black History Hanging - 19.10.16

To celebrate Black History Month, East Acton were visited by an amazing lady named Nicola. Nicola shared an amazing story about the struggles of black people in America through a fascinating true story. This story was told through symbols which the children were then asked to help create using material. These material symbols will now be sewn by Nicola, making a huge wall hanging to for East Acton Primary, providing a wonderful reminder of the issues discussed during Black History Month. Check out the pictures below and we'll be sure to show you the finished result when it's finished.

Aut 1 - Week 6 - 10.10.16

Science

This week in Science we have started looking at food chains- the movement of energy through consumption. Food chains start with a producer (normally a plant) and then are consumed, by primary, secondary and tertiary consumers. Below are a couple of websites which will help you to learn more.

Aut 1 - Week 5 - 3.10.16

Science

In Science we have begun looking at animals and their diets- carnivores (carnivorous animals mainly eat other animals) , herbivores (do not eat other animals, only plants, seeds and nuts) , and omnivores (animals that eat both plants and other animals).

Below is an excellent website from Marwell Zoo. If you go to the explore section you can learn about many fascinating animals, including information about their diets. It's interesting to see how animals have evolved according to their diets. Check it out!

Aut 1 - Week 4 - 26.9.16

Maths

This week we are focusing on learning multiples of 6 and 9. This requires the students to know their 6 and 9 times tables securely. Please practice these times tables, as well as all the other to 12x12. I have attached a link below to a great game called 'Hit the Button' which is fantastic for helping students to develop their times table knowledge. Please have a go and continue to use Mathletics as well.

Aut 1 - Week 3 - 19.9.16

Science

We have began looking at our science topic for this term, 'Animals including humans'. To begin this topic we have looked at the digestive system. We have looked at the organs involved and how they function in the digestive process. Below is a link to a fantastic website which breaks the digestive process down (forgive the pun). It will help you 'digest' the learning in class. cheeky

Topic

This week we will begin researching the Anglo-Saxon settlers in Britain. There are many great websites which will help with this research. Check out the links below to begin researching at home. These will certainly help with the home projects.

Respect week

During the first week back we'll be getting to know one another better and establishing the rules and expectations for the year. We'll be thinking about what we like, what we're good and then thinking about how we can learn and develop further, setting goals for us to achieve in the coming academic year.
