Spring 1 Week 5

4.2.19

 

English – This week we will be reading the book ‘The Paperbag Princess’. We will be retelling the story, focusing on using the correct tense.

 

Maths – We will be recapping addition and subtraction and applying our knowledge to solve problems.

 

Science – We will be researching what animals need to survive. We will be creating fact files about how to care for pets.

 

Topic – We will be reflecting on our trip and thinking about the life of Samuel Pepys. We will be thinking about the influence he had and how he helped to change the course of history.

Spring 1 Week 4

This week we will be carrying out assessments in maths, reading, writing and grammar.

 

Our school trip to Gunnersbury Park is on Thursday 31st January. We will be taking part in a Great Fire of London workshop to find out what life was like in 1666.

-Lunch is provided by school

-Children are to wear school uniform but weather appropriate footwear and outerwear

*PE will now take place on Wednesdays. Please make sure you have correct kit in school.

 

*We have also changed some reading groups and the days booked are changed. Please make sure reading books and reading record books are in school every day.

 

English – This week we will be learning about inference skills and how to apply them to answering test style questions.

 

Maths – We will carrying on with statistics and focusing on how to read the data to answer questions effectively.

 

Science – We will be learning about babies, we will be thinking about how they change over time and grow into adults. We will be using prediction and observation skills.

 

Topic – This week we will be learning about the order events that took place during the fire. We will be creating our own timelines.

Spring 1 Week 2

English – This week we will be planning and writing our own discursive texts. We will be debating whether or not we believe children should wear school uniform and whether or not we think dragons are suitable pets.

 

Maths –We will be starting a unit on statistics. We will be looking at different ways of recording and presenting data, such as tally charts, bar charts and pictograms.

 

Science – We will be discussing the importance of exercise for humans. We will be carrying out difference exercises and monitoring the effects on our bodies.

 

Topic – This week we will be looking at what life was like in London in 1666. We will be comparing the houses, buildings, people and transport.

Spring 1 Week 1

English – We will be starting a book called ‘George and the Dragon’. We will be retelling the story with a focus on using time fronted adverbials.

 

Maths –We will be recapping division and solving problems using division and multiplication.

 

Science – We will be thinking about how to keep humans healthy. We will be looking at the different food groups and the quantities of different foods humans need to eat.

 

Topic – We will be starting our new topic on ‘Samuel Pepys and The Great Fire of London’. We will be noting down what we already know and what we would like to find out.

Autumn 2 Week 8

English – This week we will be studying poetry. We will be reading through various winter poems and comparing them. We will have a go at writing our own poems.

 

Maths –We will move on to division this week. We will be using cubes to share into equal groups.

 

Science – We will be starting our new topic on Animals including Humans. We will be thinking about what we need to survive.

 

Topic – This week we will be finishing our leaflets comparing Scotland and South Africa.

Please remember that school finishes at 1:30pm.

Children may wear their own clothes – Christmas jumpers preferred!

Autumn 2 Week 7

English – We will be writing our own letters in the style of ‘Dear Teacher’. We will be looking at letters and identifying the key features before planning our own.

 

Maths –We will be looking at the 10 times table this week and then solving problems using the 2s, 5s and 10s.

 

Science – We will be starting our new topic on Animals including Humans. We will be thinking about what we need to survive.

 

Topic – This week we will be writing our leaflets of Scotland and South Africa.

 

Enrichment Afternoon - This Friday we will be having a go at learning new skills in our class. We will be learning Arabic calligraphy with Mrs Samatar and Mrs Dualeh.

 

DT Week – This week is design technology week. We will be cooking Scottish Oatcakes. We will be designing them, writing recipes, baking and evaluating the process.

Autumn 2 Week 6

English – This week we will be starting a new book called ‘Dear Teacher’. We will be becoming familiar with the story and letter writing.

 

Maths – We will be starting a new topic on multiplication this week. We will be learning that the ‘x’ symbol means groups of. We will be looking at the 2x and 5x times tables.

 

Science – We will be finishing off our unit on Forces and starting a new unit called Animals including Humans.

 

Topic – We will be planning to write a leaflet all about Scotland and South Africa. We will be thinking about all the information we have learnt and selecting the most suitable facts.

This week Chestnut class was visited by London Fire Brigade. We learnt all about what to do in emergency situation. Here are our top tips:

-Learn your full address, including the postcode

 

-Emergency services phone number is 999

 

-Make sure you have a working smoke alarm at home

 

-Always blow out candles when you leave a room

 

-Adults should put water in to ash trays to make sure cigarettes are put out completely

 

-Create a fire escape plan – we have learnt what to do depending on the type of building you live in and where the fire is

 

-Always tidy away toys and clothes as they can block escape routes

Autumn 2 Week 5

This week we will be carrying out assessments to see what the children have learnt so far in Autumn 2. We will be assessing English reading, writing and SPaG and maths.

 

Science – We will be planning an information poster all about forces.

 

Topic – We will be comparing daily life in Scotland and in South Africa. We will be thinking about where people live, what jobs people do and what school life is like for children.

 

Autumn 2 Week 4

English – This week we will be having a go at some comprehension questions and looking at how to answer them correctly. We will also be learning about expanded noun phrases and apostrophes for possession.

 

Maths – This week we will be learning about subtraction. We will be recapping using a number line and moving on to column method.

 

Science – We will be finishing off our investigation about the bounciest ball and creating bar charts to show our results.

 

Topic – We will be looking at the environment in Scotland and South Africa. We will be comparing photos and looking at maps. We will also be researching the weather.

 

Autumn 2 Week 3

English – We will be starting a new book called ‘The Great Fairy Tale Disaster’. We will be using role play to act the story and retelling it.

 

Maths – This week we will be learning about subtraction. We will be recapping what it is and working out answers using a number like.

 

Science – We will be carrying out an investigation to find out which ball is bounciest. We will need to think about how to make it a fair test.

 

Topic – We will be looking at the environment in Scotland and South Africa. We will be comparing photos and looking at maps. We will also be researching the weather.

 

This week is Anti-Bullying Week. We will be learning about what bullying is and how to make sure bullying does not happen in our school. We will be doing lots of work in our class and with other classes on this.

Autumn 2 Week 2

English – We will be continuing with ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’. We will be writing our own newspaper reports about what happened in the story.

 

Maths – This week we will be starting the column method of addition. We will use it to solve equations that do not require regrouping.

 

Science – We will be exploring push and pull forces and effects they have on objects made from different materials.

 

Topic – We will be finding out where Scotland and South Africa are in the world. We will be naming the seven continents, five oceans, countries and capital cities.

 

Autumn 2 Week 1

English – We will be starting a new book called ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs'. We will be comparing it to the traditional tale and writing the beginning.

 

Maths – We will be starting our unit on addition. We will begin by partitioning numbers and using a number line.

 

Science – Our new topic is 'Forces'. We will be thinking about what we already know and what we would like to know.

 

Topic – Our new topic will be 'Scotland South Africa'. We will be sharing what we already know and thinking about what we would like to find out about the two countries.

English – We will be continuing with ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’, focusing on using conjunctions in our writing.

 

Maths – We will be carrying on with money this week. We will be naming the coins and notes, and comparing and finding totals.

 

Black History Month – We will be reading ‘My Two Grannies’ by Floella Benjamin and doing a piece of writing about the story.

 

Trip to Gunnersbury Park – Surviving the Stone Age Workshop

 

This Thursday we will going on our trip, please make sure that you in school on time as we will be learning promptly after registration.

You must wear your school uniform but a weather appropriate jacket and footwear is recommended.

Please bring a healthy packed lunch (no nuts, sweets or chocolates) and plastic water bottle.

English – We will be starting a new book called ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’. We will be using role play and retelling the story.

 

Maths – We will be learning about money this week. We will be naming the coins and notes, and comparing and finding totals.

 

Science – We will be researching recycling. We will find which materials can be recycled and how this happens. We will be answering comprehension questions on recycling.

 

Topic – This week we will be using all of our knowledge to create a leaflet about the Stone Age.

Autumn 1 Week 5

This week in English and during maths we will be reviewing our learning so far. Children will be writing their own stories in English. In maths we will be recapping all the skills we have learnt this term.

 

Science – We will carrying out an investigation to change the way objects look. We will be thinking about the materials objects are made from and how we can change them.

 

Topic – This week we will be looking at Stone Age art work. We will be trying to create our own cave paintings.

Autumn 1 Week 4

English – We will be starting a new book called ‘A Lion in the Meadow’. We will be writing book reviews and retelling the story.

 

Maths – We will be continuing with place value, focusing on addition. We will be adding tens and ones.

 

Science – We will be discussing why different materials are suitable for making different objects and how the same objects can be made from different materials.

 

Topic – This week we will be looking at the types of food Stone Age people ate. We will be learning about hunter-gatherers, how they hunted and the weapons they used. We will be learning about the types of foods gatherers foraged for and designing our own Stone Age menu.

Autumn 1 Week 3

English – We will be continuing with the book ‘Five Minutes Peace’ by Jill Murphy. We will writing our own diary entries as different characters.

 

Maths – We will be continuing with place value. This week we will focus on ordering and comparing numbers. We will need to use vocabulary such as greater than, less than, most and least. We will be using the <, > and = symbols.

 

Science – We will be walking around our school grounds to identify different materials and thinking about their properties.

 

Topic – This week we will be looking at the types of homes Stone Age people lived in. We will look at how they changed over time and how they compare to the homes that we live in today.

Our PE day is Tuesday; please make sure you have your full kit on your peg every day.

Please bring your book bag with reading books to school daily. Please carry on reading for at least 30 minutes a day to an adult at home.
