Year 2 - Chestnut Archived 2016-17

Summer 2 Week 6 – 10.7.17

 

Monday – Today children will be finding out who their new teachers are and their new classmates. They will be spending time in their classrooms getting to know each other.

Reports will be sent home to parents today.

 

Tuesday – LegoLand Trip

 

We aim to leave school at 9.00am and return at approx. 3.15pm depending on traffic.  To ensure all runs smoothly on the day, please have your child in school at 8.45am.  Please note arriving late may mean your child could miss the trip.

Children will need to have a healthy packed lunch and a bottle of water on the day (no fizzy drinks/ glass bottles, nuts, chocolates/sweets allowed). The lunch should be in a bag that can be thrown away afterward so children do not need to carry it with them all day. 

Children will need to wear suitable clothing – please check weather forecast for that day.

Wednesday – This morning will be ‘Sports Morning’. Children should come to school in their coloured t-shirt to represent their team. They should wear black shorts and PE shoes and bring a named bottle of water. Parents are invited to come and watch and take part!

Thursday – After school today is the Summer Fair, please collect your child at 3:15pm then spend time enjoying the stalls and games we have set up.

Friday – Don’t forget we have tennis lessons on Friday afternoons – make sure you have PE shoes in school and a named bottle of water.

Summer 2 Week 5 – 3.7.17

 

English – We will be looking at the traditional tale of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We will be completing reading comprehension on this story and retelling the story.

 

Maths – This week will be a problem solving week. We will be looking at a range of problems involving shape, number and money.

 

Be the best you can be - We will also be finishing our work on ‘Be the best you can be’ for this year. We will be thinking about all the skills we have learnt and how we will use them next year.

Summer 2 Week 3 – 19.6.17

 

English – This week will be starting a new book by Anthony Browne called ‘Silly Billy’. We will be thinking about the ideas in the story and retelling it.

 

Maths – We will be recapping division this week. We will also be looking at division with remainders. We will also be finding fractions of amounts.

 

Our class assembly is on Wednesday 21st June at 9am in the hall.

Summer 2 Week 2 – 12.6.17

 

English – This week we will be thinking about rhetorical questions and writing adverts.

 

Maths – We will be carrying on with column addition this week. We will also be revising time.

 

Science – We will be thinking about the importance of healthy eating. We will be creating block graphs about our favourite fruits and vegetables.

Summer 2 Week 1 – 5.6.17

 

English – This week we will be reading a book called ‘Willy the Wimp’ by Anthony Browne. We will be retelling the story and writing book reviews.

 

Maths – We will be learning about column addition this week. We will be using Dienes to help with regrouping.

 

Science – Our topic this half term will be about humans. This week will be thinking about the human life cycle. We will also be carrying out an investigation to answer ‘Do taller children always have bigger feet?’.

 

Topic – We will be starting our new topic on toys and books. We will be sorting modern and old toys and writing about their differences and similarities.

Reading Morning

Home Learning Gallery and Cake Sale

Thursday 25th May

Please come along and see the exciting home learning projects children have created at home over this half term.

 

There will also be a cake sale in the hall to raise money for our school. Key Stage 2 children will be donating cakes.

Summer 1 Week 5 – 15.5.17

 

This week children will be sitting the end of key stage tests. There are two maths papers and two English reading papers, we will sit one each morning from Monday to Thursday. Children may be organised differently to accommodate how the assessments are carried out. We will ensure that this is done in a calm and positive way to ensure that all children feel comfortable. All teachers endeavour to make this a stress-free time and we ask that you support us with this.

 

End of key stage 1 tests are used to confirm our teacher assessment only. Teacher assessment is based on performance over the whole school year and not just performance in formal tests. Parents will be informed of teacher assessment outcomes at the end of the school year.   

 

To help give your child the best chance, please:

  • Ensure they have had a restful sleep
  • Give them a healthy breakfast
  • Arrive at school at 8:45am everyday

 

We will not be sending home any homework or spellings this weekend. If you do wish to work with your child, please practise basic number skills, such as number bonds, times tables and reading.

Summer 1 Week 4 – 8.5.17

 

English – This week we will be writing instructions. We will be basing our instructions on the spell in ‘Room on the Broom’. We will be asking children to include adjectives, subordinating conjunctions and alliteration.

 

Maths – We will be revisiting topics from throughout the year, including money, time and fractions.

 

We will be starting tennis lessons on Friday afternoons at the Park Club. Please ensure that children have their PE kits in school every day, including suitable footwear for sports activity.

Summer 1 Week 3 – 2.5.17

 

English – This week we will be reading ‘Room on a Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. We will be retelling the story and then creating our own version.

 

Maths – We will be revisiting topics from throughout the year, including shape, measures and data handling.

 

Science – We will be looking at different types of trees found in the UK. We will be identifying trees by looking at their leaves. We will be creating graphs to show the frequency of each tree.

 

Topic – We will be thinking about mountain locations. We will be using our imaginations to write a diary entry about a journey across a mountain.

Summer 1 Week 2 – 24.4.17

 

English – This week we will be continuing with ‘The Mousehole Cat’. We will be writing recounts from the points of view of different characters.

 

Maths – We will be recapping more than and less than. We will be comparing different numbers using the <,> and = symbols.

 

Science – We will be writing a letter all about the different types of trees and flowering plants that are typically found in the UK.

 

Topic – We will be thinking about beach locations and writing a piece of description about them.

Summer 1 Week 1 – 18.4.17

 

Be the best you can be

On Tuesday we will be continuing with this by looking at resilience, perseverance and never giving up. We will trying new things and tasks that may be challenging and thinking about why it is important to always try our best, even when things may be difficult.  

 

English – This week we will be starting a new book called ‘The Mousehole Cat’. We will be retelling the story.

 

Maths – We will be looking at reading scales this week. We will be looking mass, temperature and volume.

 

Science – We will be beginning our new topic on ‘Plants’. We will be thinking about what we already know and what we would like to find out.

 

Topic – Our new topic will be all about different places – the countryside, mountains, beaches, forests and towns and cities. We will be discussing what we already know about these places and when we may have visited them before.

Spring 2 Week 6 – 27.3.17

 

 

English – This week we will be focusing on grammar. We will be revisiting skills such as, using exclamation and question marks, apostrophes for possession and expanded noun phrases.  

 

Maths – We will be learning about position and direction this week. We will be using mathematical vocabulary to describe where an object is. We will be thinking about quarter, half and three-quarter turns clockwise and anti-clockwise.

 

School finishes at 1:30pm on Friday.

Spring 2 Week 5 – 20.3.17

 

 

English – We will be writing calligram poems based ‘The Day of Ahmed’s Secret’. We will be using onomatopoeia and alliteration. We will also be practising another comprehension paper.  

 

Maths – We will be recapping multiplication and division this week. We will be focussing on the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times table.

 

Science – This week we will be continuing with our ‘Electricity’ topic. We will be looking at how to build a circuit with a light bulb.

 

School Disco – This will be held on Wednesday 22nd March, 2pm-3pm. Children will need to pay £2 for a ticket and drink. Children may bring their own clothes to change into. Children that do not wish to participate in the disco will stay with their class teacher. All money raised will be collected by the PSA for school.

This week we visited the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. We took the bus and underground. Once we arrived we carried out an investigation into different artefacts in the museum. We used microscopes, magnifying glasses and scales to try and answer questions about the different objects. We also looked around the gallery all about mammals.

Spring 2 Week 4 – 13.3.17

 

 

English – We will be starting a new book called ‘The Day of Ahmed’s Secret’. This is another story set in a different country. We will be retelling the story in the present tense. We will also be looking at comprehension tests.

 

Maths – We will be recapping addition and subtraction this week. We will be using a number line to solve equations and missing number problems.

 

Science – This week we will be celebrating ‘British Science Week’. We will be exploring the natural environment around us and thinking about seasons and weather. We will also be carrying out an investigation using milk and food colouring.

 

Topic – This week we will be looking at the town in the UK in contrast to our non-European country last week. We will be planning and asking questions to someone from there. We will be thinking about similarities and differences between the two places.

School Trip

Natural History Museum – Wednesday 8th March

 

Reminders:

  • Please arrive at school at 8.45am; we will be leaving school at 9am. If you are late, you may not be able to attend.
  • Children should wear correct school uniform.
  • Children need to bring a healthy packed lunch – no sweets, chocolates, fizzy drinks, glass bottles or nuts.
  • Children need to bring a named plastic bottle of water.
  • Children must not bring book bags or backpacks – lunch should be carried in a named plastic bag which can be disposed of when finished so hands can be kept free.
  • We are aiming to be back before the end of the school day, so collect your child as usual at 3.15pm.

Spring 2 Week 3 – 6.3.17

 

This week we will be carrying out assessments to monitor progress so far. This will help us to plan what we need to teach the children over the next term. We will provide any necessary feedback from these assessments at the upcoming parents evening in March.

 

English – We will be asking the children to plan and write a narrative piece.

 

Maths – We will be assessing children on the units taught so far this year.

 

Science – We will be continuing our learning about electricity. We will be learning about where it comes from and creating information leaflets.

 

Topic – We will be asking a special visitor from Saudi Arabia lots of questions about what life is like there. We will be thinking back to our work on Ealing in the Autumn term and making comparisons.

Spring 2 Week 2 – 27.2.17

 

World Book Week

 

This week we will be celebrating ‘World Book Week’ in school. We will be carrying out lots of exciting reading activities every day.

 

Things we will be doing:

  • Designing a book token competition entry
  • Writing a whole school story
  • Making Read-a-thon posters
  • Visiting Acton Library
  • Workshop with a story teller

 

Children are invited to dress up as their favourite book character (please no superheroes/heroines/princesses) on Friday 3rd March.  Children may bring along the book linked to their costume. The best costume in each class will win a book prize.  There will be a parade in the hall at 9am for parents to see all the creative costumes.

 

Children will also receive a £1 book token. This can be used in exchange for one of ten special £1 books for World Book Day or used to get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more.

Spring 2 Week 1 – 20.2.17

 

Be the best you can be

We will be continuing with our work on this on Monday. We will be thinking about beliefs, values and respect.

 

English – We will be reading a new book this week called ‘Jamela’s Dress’. It is a story set in another culture. We will be retelling this story and planning our own adapted version.

 

Maths – This week we will be learning about fractions. We will be finding fractions of shapes and fractions of amounts. At home you can think about finding halves, quarters, thirds and three quarters of amounts and lengths.

 

Science – We will be starting our new topic on electricity. We will be thinking about what electricity is and what it is used for.

 

Topic – Our topic this half term is based on geography. We will be learning about a country outside Europe. We will be learning about Saudi Arabia an comparing it to the UK and a town here.

Spring 1 Week 6 – 6.2.17

 

English – We will be reading a new book this week called ‘The Dragon Machine’. We will be retelling the story, including expanded noun phrases and fronted time adverbials.

 

Maths – This week will be focussing on shape. We will be thinking about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

 

Science – We will be learning about nutrition this week. We will be thinking about the types of foods humans need to eat to stay healthy.

 

Home Learning Projects

Please make sure these are brought to school on or before Wednesday 8th February. We will be holding a gallery in the hall for parents and children to see each other’s work.

Spring 1 Week 5 – 30.1.17

 

English – We will be learning about emails this week. We will be thinking about when to use emails and their purpose, and the tone used when sending them.

 

Maths – We will working on calculation strategies, focussing on subtraction in particular.

 

Science – We will be thinking about different animals and their young. We will be thinking about how humans and animals change over time.

 

Topic – We will be using all the information we have found out about Florence Nightingale to create leaflets about her.

Spring 1 Week 3 – 16.1.17

 

On Monday we will be having a special visitor to our school as part of ‘Be the best you can be’. The visitor will be Olympian Jo Mersh. She will be talking to the children about how see became successful and inspiring them.

 

English – We will be writing discursive texts this week about whether or not dragons should be kept as pets.

 

Maths – We will be continuing our unit on multiplication and division. We will be focussing on 2s, 5s and 10s.

 

Science – We will be learning about different habitats and why they are important for animals to survive. We will be thinking about how animals are adapted to their environments.

 

Topic – This week we will be using the information we found during our computing lessons on Mary Seacole to write a biography about her.

Parents’ Evening

Please come along to parents’ evening this week on Wednesday and Thursday after school in the hall. You have been allocated a 10 minute time slot to discuss your child’s progress so far with their class teacher. Please see your teacher if you are not sure which time slot you have been given.

Autumn 2 Week 14 – 12.12.16

   

English – This week we will be looking at list poems. We will be finding out what they are and creating our own.

 

Maths – We will be beginning a new unit on data handling. We will be collecting and organising information into tally charts, block graphs and pictograms. We will then be interpreting our results.

 

Science – This week we will be building the bridges we designed and will finding out which one is the strongest. We will think about how to carry out a fair test and evaluate the process overall. 

Autumn 2 Week 13 – 5.12.16

   

English – This week will be focusing on comprehension. We will be looking back over the assessments last week and thinking about how to answer different types of questions effectively.

 

Maths – We will be finishing our unit on measuring length this week. Please help your child at home by allowing them to complete their home learning with a ruler.

  

Science – We will be planning an investigation based on the strength of different types of materials. We will be designing bridges using a ruler.

 

We will be rehearsing our Christmas show this week – don’t forget that costumes need to be brought to school on Monday 5th December. All items of clothing must be named and brought in in a labelled plastic bag. Thank you!

English – We will be continuing with ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’. This week we will be focusing on newspaper reports. We will be looking at the key features and writing our own. Please look at newspapers at home with your children.

 

Maths – We will be beginning a new unit on measurement. We will be focusing on length and measuring objects in metres and centimetres accurately.

  

Science – This week we will be testing the strength of different types of paper. We will be predicting which paper we think will be the most durable and recording our results in a bar chart. 

We are learning a new poem to recite at the end of term assembly.

This week we will be learning about:

  

English – This week we will be reading a new book called ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’. We will be retelling the story and thinking about how to edit our writing. We will be focusing on adverbs and tenses.

 

Maths – We will be learning about addition using a number line this week. At home please continue to work on basic number skills, such as number bonds to 10 and 20.

  

Science – We will be carrying out an investigation into what happens to different materials when you squash and bend them. We will be thinking about the importance of carrying out a fair test.

 

Anti-Bullying Week

This week is anti-bullying week; we will be thinking about what bullying is and how we can stop it. We will be completing activities throughout the week to show what we have learnt. 

Autumn 2 Week 9 – 7.11.16

English – This week we will be continuing with ‘The Tunnel’. We will be writing diary entries from the points of view of Jack and Rose. We will also be learning about inference skills during reading sessions.

 

Maths – We will be continuing our work on addition and subtraction using bar models. We will be solving addition and subtraction problems with one and two steps.

 

Topic – We will be beginning our topic on ‘The Great Fire of London’. We will be ordering the key events of the fire and writing a newspaper article about what happened.

 

Science – We will be carrying out an investigation into what happens to different materials when you apply different forces to them. We will be recording our results in a table.

Bonfire Night!

 

Firework safety – the basics

  • Make sure children stand at a safe distance from the bonfire.
  • Keep everyone well back from the display.
  • Never return to a lit firework.
  • Never throw fireworks.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed metal box.
  • Always follow the instructions when using fireworks.

 

Sparkler Safety

  • Never put them in your pocket
  • Never pick one up off the floor
  • Make sure an adult is always present
  • Light them one at a time
  • Wear gloves
  • Hold them at arm’s length
  • When it goes out, put the hot end in a bucket of water
  • Sparklers are not suitable for children under 5 years old

 

Autumn 2 Week 8 – 31.10.16

 

This week we will be learning about:

  

English – This week will the whole school will be reading the book ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne. We will be writing our own stories based on this book.

 

Maths – We will be starting a new unit on addition and subtraction worded problems. We will be using bar modelling to help us solve these problems.

 

Topic – We will be beginning our topic on ‘The Great Fire of London’. We will be thinking about what we already know and what we would like to find out.

 

Science – Our topic this half term is ‘Forces’. We will be looking at pulling, pushing and twisting. This week we will be sorting different actions and movements into these categories.

English – This week will be starting a new book called ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’. We will be sequencing and retelling the story.

 

Maths – We will be finishing our unit on addition and subtraction this week. Please keep practicing basic number skills, such as number bonds and counting in 2s, 3s and 5s at home with your child.

 

Topic – This will be the last week of our topic on ‘Our Local Area’. We will be creating information booklets all about Ealing Broadway and sharing our home-learning projects.

English – This week will be continuing with our book ‘A Lion in the Meadow’. We will be researching big cats and creating information booklets about them.

 

Maths – We will be working on addition and subtraction this week. At home please practice your number bonds within twenty.

 

This Tuesday we visited Ealing Broadway as part of our topic on ‘Our Local Area’. We looked at various buildings in Ealing and discussed their uses. We had a go at sketching some of the sights we saw.

Autumn 1 Week 5 – 3.10.16  

 

This week we will be learning about:

 

Wednesday this is week is ‘No Pens Day’. This means that children and adults across the school will not be able to use pens/pencils to carry out their learning.

 

English – This week will be doing drama and role play activities for ‘No Pens Day’. We will also be looking at reading comprehension and question words.

 

Maths – We will be finishing our unit on place value this week. Please keep practicing place value at home with your child. We will be beginning our next unit on addition and subtraction.

 

Topic – This week we will be visiting Ealing Broadway as part of our local area topic. We will be looking at the local features and key buildings.

 

Things to remember:

·         We will be outside all day so please send your child to school in weather appropriate outerwear and footwear. Children must wear full school uniform.

·         Please give your child a healthy packed lunch in a plastic bag. No nuts, sweets, chocolates, fizzy drinks or glass bottles. If you require a packed lunch from school please speak to your class teacher as soon as possible as they need to be ordered in advance.

·         Please arrive on time to school so we can leave promptly. Children should be collected from school at 3.15pm as usual. 

Class meetings will be held on Monday 26th September at 9am or 3.15pm in the classroom. Please try to attend as this is a chance to find out all about year 2 and meet your child’s teacher.

This week we will be learning about:

 

English – We will be starting a new book called ‘A lion in the meadow’. We will be retelling the story and editing our work.

 

Maths – We will working on place value. We will be thinking about the value of each digit in a number and using bead strings and Dienes to help us.

 

Science – We will be learning all about insulation.

 

If you have not yet returned the permission slip for the trip to Ealing Broadway please do this as soon as possible. Thank you.

 

This week we were visited by London Fire Brigade.

 

Here are some top tips to help keep your family safe at home.

 

  1. Children should learn their postcode in case they need to tell emergency services their location.
  2. When travelling in a car all passengers should always wear seat belts – fire fighters are often called out to accidents that involve passengers that should have been strapped in.
  3. Keep all floors at home clear; put away all toys and clothes at night so you can find your way out safely in an emergency.
  4. Smoke alarms should be on every floor of building. They should be tested weekly. Never remove the batteries from smoke alarms.
  5. When running a bath always start with the cold water then add the hot water.

English – We will be continuing with ‘Five Minutes Peace’. We will be writing diary entries from the point of view of Mrs Large.

 

Maths – We will be focussing on numbers to 100 and place value.

 

Science – We will be looking at the properties of different materials.

 

Topic – Our topic this half term is ‘Our Local Area’. We will be using maps and looking for local features and landmarks.

We have also planned a trip to Ealing Broadway, please sign and return the letter to your class teacher as soon as possible.

 

This week London Fire Brigade will be visiting year 2. We will be having a special talk all about keeping safe at home.

English – We will be learning about the book ‘five minutes Peace’ by Jill Murphy. We will be sequencing and retelling the story.

 

Maths – We will be recapping place value and number skills.

 

Please make sure your child has their book bag, PE kit and water bottle in school every day.

Home learning will be sent home on Friday and will be due in on Wednesday.

Autumn 1 Week 1 – 7.9.16

 

Throughout the next few days we will be getting to know the children and becoming familiar with the routines in year 2. 

Welcome to Chestnut Class

I am writing to welcome you and your child to Chestnut Class. As many of you know from last year, my name is Miss Shah and I am the class teacher. Mrs Samatar is the teaching assistant for Chestnut Class, and working will be with individuals and small groups. We are all very excited to get to know your child better as the year goes on.

 

Things to remember:

  • Children may come into school from 8.45am for soft start, school finishes at 3.15pm.
  • PE days are Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Please make sure your child’s PE kit and school uniform are all named.
