Spelling Homework 15.01.21

This week, we are learning to add the suffixes ing, ed, er, est and y to words of one syllable, that end in a single consonant letter after a single vowel letter.

The rule is to double the last consonant letter of the root word to keep the vowel short.

English

This week, we will be reading 'The Paper Bag Princess'. Watch the video to familiarise yourself with the story. We will write this story ourselves, by the end of the week.

Spelling Homework 08.01.21

This week, we are learning to spell words that have the 'j' sound spelt 'g' before e, i and y.

Also, we are learning to spell words that have the 'ee' sound spelt 'ey'. Notice the suffix 's' to make these 'ey' words plural. 

English

This week, we will be writing our own version of the story 'George and the Dragon'. We will change the name 'George'. We will choose a name that begins with the same sound as 'j' but is spelt 'G'.

For example: Gemma, Gina, Georgie, Ginnie, Gerry, Gerald.

We can also change the mouse to a cat who has run out of milk or a dog who has run out of meaty bones.

Another change we could make is princess to prince.

Maths

We will continue to learn about money. We need to be able to use £ and p signs. We will also be totalling money and finding the same amount using different coins.

We will continue to use our number bonds to add multiples of 10. For example, 5 + 5 = 10 will help us with 50 + 50 = 100. Also, we will focus on adding and subtracting 1 and 10. We need to know that adding 1 to a number is related to one more and subtracting 1 from a number is related to one less.

Maths

We will focus on revising our number bonds so that we can recall them instantly without needing to use counters.

History

How similar and different are the lives of the Stone Age and Iron Age people to our own lives?

We will compare our life today with the life of a child who lived during the Stone Age. We will compare houses from the Stone Age with today.

We will be looking at the work of Pablo Picasso in more detail. We will look at what is being conveyed by this work and how it makes us feel.

This week, we will read the story, 'A Lion in the Meadow'. We will become familiar with the story pattern and we will look at the description of the lion. Use the story map to recite and act out the story. This will help us to describe our own story character in our own version of the story.

In Phonics, we will continue to revise sounds that we learnt in Year 1. We will practice reading the Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds at speed.

This week we are learning to spell the days of the week. Each day has the 'ay' sound at the end of it. Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of each day.

This week, we will write own our version of a diary in the voice of Lester or Laura from the story, 'Five Minutes' Peace'. We will use our knowledge from the diary we wrote in the voice of Mrs Large in week 2.

 

Phonics

We are going to look at a selection of artefacts to help us understand why it was called the Stone Age. We will be using material and visual discourse to help us.

We will look at a diary entry in the voice of Mrs Large and we will identify features of a diary that we can use in our writing. By the end of the week, we will have written our own diary in the voice of Mrs Large.

In Maths, we will continue to look at different representations of numbers to show ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ using equipment, drawings and numerals. We will use number lines to represent the order of numbers and place value grids to describe how a number is made.

Science

We will continue to work with everyday objects and we will group them according to the material they are made of. We will also group objects according to the property of the material they are made of. 

History

We will talk about nomadic people during the Stone Age. We must be able to talk about why they were nomadic and why they may have lived in caves.

  • Drop off: 8:30 to 8:40 (Main gates)
  • Collection time: 3:00 (Main gates)
  • Each child will need a water bottle that is clearly labeled with their name and class.
  • Children will be expected to wear full uniform.
  • Every Tuesday, children in Chestnut class will need to come to school in their PE kit and they will wear it for the whole day.
  • Homework books are sent home every Friday. Please hand in on Tuesday.

In English, we will be reading ‘Five Minutes’ Peace’ by Jill Murphy. We will retell the story through drama, using actions and a reciting with a story map.

Maths

In Maths, we will focus on reading and understanding numbers to 100. We will use our growing understanding of place value to help sort, compare and order numbers. Also, we will look at different representations of numbers to show ‘tens’ and ‘ones’.  

 

History

To help children's understanding of chronology, we will be learning about the Stone Age. This unit will allow the children to focus on human history and how it is the same and different to today.

Focus question:

How similar and different are the lives of the Stone Age and Iron Age people to our own lives.
