Autumn 1 Week 4

28.09.20 - 02.10.20

Spelling Homework 25.09.20

This week we are learning to spell words that have the same sound in them. Even though these words have the same vowel sound, they are represented with different letters.

These are the digraphs we a learning this week: ay, a-e, and ai.

English

This week, we will read the story, 'A Lion in the Meadow'. We will become familiar with the story pattern and we will look at the description of the lion. Use the story map to recite and act out the story. This will help us to describe our own story character in our own version of the story.

Phonics

In Phonics, we will continue to revise sounds that we learnt in Year 1. We will practice reading the Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds at speed.

We will also practice our sounding and blending skills to read words. Click the link to see some of the words that we will sound and blend in class this week.

Maths

We will use our understanding of place value and comparing numbers to order more than two numbers. We will learn to compare the tens in numbers before comparing the ones.

Science

We will compare the suitability of different everyday materials.

We will try to explain why different materials can be used to make the same objects and say which properties make some materials unsuitable for different purposes.

Is chocolate a suitable material to use for a teapot?

Explain.

History

How similar and different are the lives of the Stone Age and Iron Age people to our own lives?

We will compare our life today with the life of a child who lived during the Stone Age.

Autumn 1 Week 3

21.09.20 - 25.09.20

Spelling Homework 18.09.20

This week we are learning to spell the days of the week. Each day has the 'ay' sound at the end of it. Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of each day.

Use the Supermovers song to help you.

English

This week, we will write own our version of a diary in the voice of Lester or Laura from the story, 'Five Minutes' Peace'. We will use our knowledge from the diary we wrote in the voice of Mrs Large in week 2.

Phonics

In Phonics, we will revise sounds that we learnt in Year 1. Click the link to Set1 and Set 2 Speed Sounds. We will practice reading and writing the 'ay' sound.

We will also practice our sounding and blending skills to read words. Click the link to see some of the words that we will sound and blend in class this week.

Maths

We will build on our 'tens' and 'ones' knowledge by partitioning numbers using our equipment and representing this in a part-whole model. We will begin to look at the related addition facts.

Science

We will identify everyday materials and their properties. We will take a survey of materials found in three different locations - on our table, in the classroom and in the playground.

History

We are going to look at a selection of artefacts to help us understand why it was called the Stone Age. We will be using material and visual discourse to help us.

Material discourse is using actual objects.

Visual discourse is using images to help us understand.

Autumn 1 Week 2

14.09.20 - 18.09.20

English

We will look at a diary entry in the voice of Mrs Large and we will identify features of a diary that we can use in our writing. By the end of the week, we will have written our own diary in the voice of Mrs Large.

Phonics

In Phonics, we will revise sounds that we learnt in Year 1. We will practice reading the Set 1 and Set 2 sounds at speed. Click the link to Set 1 and Set 2 Speed Sounds.

We will also practice our sounding and blending skills to read words. Click the link to some words that we will sound and blend in class this week.

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to look at different representations of numbers to show ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ using equipment, drawings and numerals. We will use number lines to represent the order of numbers and place value grids to describe how a number is made.

Science

We will continue to work with everyday objects and we will group them according to the material they are made of. We will also group objects according to the property of the material they are made of.

History

We will talk about nomadic people during the Stone Age. We must be able to talk about why they were nomadic and why they may have lived in caves.

Nomadic settlement
The first human visitors to Britain were nomads, following reindeer and other animal herds north.
Why would they choose caves?

Autumn 1 Week 1

07.09.20 - 11.09.20

English

In English, we will be reading ‘Five Minutes’ Peace’ by Jill Murphy. We will retell the story through drama, using actions and a reciting with a story map.

See if you can retell the story using the story map to support you.

FIVE MINUTES PEACE Book |

Maths

In Maths, we will focus on reading and understanding numbers to 100. We will use our growing understanding of place value to help sort, compare and order numbers. Also, we will look at different representations of numbers to show ‘tens’ and ‘ones’.

History

To help children's understanding of chronology, we will be learning about the Stone Age. This unit will allow the children to focus on human history and how it is the same and different to today.

Focus question:

How similar and different are the lives of the Stone Age and Iron Age people to our own lives.
