Intent
At East Acton, our Art and Design curriculum provides an inclusive and inspiring environment where all children can express themselves creatively and develop confidence in their own ideas. As a Rights Respecting School, we promote equality, respect and freedom of expression, ensuring every child feels valued and represented (Articles 2, 13, 29, 31).

Our curriculum reflects and celebrates the diversity of our school community through the study of a wide range of artists, designers, architects and craftspeople from different cultures, backgrounds and time periods. Pupils explore artists of different genders, ethnicities and traditions, enabling them to see themselves represented and to appreciate the work of others.
We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and vocabulary to respond critically to artwork and to experiment, invent and create their own pieces. Through learning about different art movements and styles, children develop an understanding of how art reflects culture, identity and history, while fostering respect for diversity and different perspectives.
Implementation
The Art and Design curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge and skills across the school. Learning is structured around three key areas:
Pupils develop their artistic skills through both art elements (line, shape, colour, value, space and form) and art processes (drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture). Each term, all year groups focus on a specific artist, art process and related elements, ensuring clear progression, consolidation and depth of learning.
Children are given regular opportunities to explore, experiment and refine their techniques, developing both creativity and technical skill. They are encouraged to express their ideas, opinions and responses to art, fostering independence and confidence (Article 13).
The curriculum promotes respect for diversity by exploring artwork from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. Through discussion and reflection, pupils learn to value differences and appreciate multiple perspectives (Article 2). Teaching is inclusive and adaptive, ensuring all children can access and succeed in the curriculum.
Impact
Our Art and Design curriculum develops engaged, reflective and creative learners who can think critically and express themselves confidently. Pupils build a strong understanding of artistic concepts and processes, using subject-specific vocabulary to discuss and evaluate their work and the work of others (Article 29).
Children develop an appreciation of art from different cultures and traditions, fostering respect, empathy and an understanding of diversity (Articles 2, 30). They are able to reflect on their own work, respond thoughtfully to feedback and take pride in their achievements.
By the end of KS2, pupils are confident in their ability to experiment, create and evaluate art. They understand the importance of art as a form of expression and cultural identity, and they leave East Acton with a lasting enjoyment of creativity and the confidence to participate in artistic and cultural life (Articles 13, 31).
