East Acton Primary School "Growing Together"

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

Governors' Role

The role of the governing board is a strategic one; its key functions are to:

  • set the aims and objectives for the school
  • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
  • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
  • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
  • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)

Structure of the Governing Board

At East Acton Primary the Governing Board meets each half term as a full group rather than following a separate committee structure.  In this way, school issues relating to areas such as finance, premises, curriculum and standards are shared across all members of the governing board.  This allows all governors to maintain a thorough understanding of these aspects and how they are interrelated.  Separate pay or appraisal committees meet at different times of the year, as well as other working groups as required.

School Improvement Priorities 2021-22:

1. To ensure all pupils feel emotionally settled and secure so they can continue to ‘catch up’ following the disruption to learning during Covid-19 restrictions.

2. To ensure all children make strong progress in Reading (including Early Reading/Phonics), Writing and Mathematics.

3. To ensure the revised curriculum is implemented effectively by teachers and secures improved outcomes for all pupils.

4. To embed effective feedback practices which are instrumental in raising attainment for all pupils with a focus on reducing the gap between the current performance of lower attaining pupils and the rest of the cohort.

5. To establish a ‘Professional Growth’ model for staff CPD with an emphasis on continual improvement for all.

Jenny Clark - Vice Chair of Governors - Co-opted Governor - Science Link Governor

I joined the Governing Board in 2017. I became a governor as I am interested in the improvement of primary school education.

I work as a Finance Business Partner at the BBC looking after large budgets in the News division and would like to use my financial knowledge to help East Acton school. I live locally and have 2 children both now at senior school. I was very involved in their primary school as a parent and now find it interesting to be involved in another school as a governor.

Stephen Pearce - Headteacher Governor

I have been the Headteacher of East Acton Primary School since September 2015.  I attend all meetings of the governing body.  I joined East Acton Primary in January 2009 as an Assistant Head then later became one of the Deputy Headteachers before taking on my current role.  Previously I worked in two large primary schools in Brent and before that I taught in Australia in Brisbane and in Coolum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.  I was born in the UK but grew up in Australia - I have lived in the UK since 1995.

As Headteacher, I work alongside the Governing Board and the rest of the Leadership Team to ensure the children at East Acton make strong progress from their starting points and achieve well, with access to a broad and balanced curriculum.  As a leadership team we promote and maintain the positive and supportive ethos of East Acton Primary whilst striving to move the school from good to outstanding in all areas.

Naomi Cole - Staff Governor

I  have been a member of the Governing Board for 11 years. I became a Governor because I had 2 children at East Acton Primary from 1991 to 2003 and wanted to contribute to the school and the local community.  As well as being a Governor,  I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant at East Acton Primary.  I have been working at the school for 13 years and currently work in year 6.  I am a life-long learner as I have just completed a Foundation Degree in Primary Teaching and Learning.

Wendy Sharpe - Co-opted Governor and Equalities Link Governor

Since becoming a parent, my children have attended nine different schools and nurseries in three different countries. I have experienced a variety of educational models and been part of several school communities. I have had three children attend East Acton Primary. My studies at university were in science and then scientific communications and I now work as an editor at a medical journal that specialises in global health. I also work occasionally as a recipe writer for a television programme in Australia and I have co-authored two cookbooks.  I am a co-opted governor and began my role at East Acton Primary in 2015.  I believe wholeheartedly in the school’s vision to help every child achieve their highest potential and I feel lucky to serve the children of East Acton Primary as a governor.

Suzie Ahferom - Parent Governor

I am a parent governor with a daughter at East Acton Primary School. I joined the Governing Board in January 2019.  I decided to become a parent governor in order to have a better understanding of the educational system and to contribute to the strategic plans of the School.

My previous background includes working in digital marketing for media agencies and within the retain sector.  I am excited to bring the perspective of the parents to the Governing Board and to support the hard working staff to ensure the school meets its goals. But most importantly that we assist in laying the foundations for the pupils to succeed.

Ammara Sadiq - Co-opted Governor

East Acton Primary is a small school where people are warm and welcoming towards each other. For this reason I try to help my son, with the help of other parents and teachers, set up a Biryani stall at the school’s annual International day and Summer fair. I think it is important for parents to help children with their studies and to encourage them to participate in extracurricular activities. When a vacancy for a parent governor came up in July 2018, I decided to join the governing body. I joined as an associate member and have been a co-opted governor since Dec 2019. I currently have two children studying at East Acton and they are in reception and year five.

I always felt a keen interest in the education sector. Before formally joining it in 2008, I used to voluntarily teach Maths and Economics. My work experience includes teaching Economics at a private university and AS Level Economics at an independent college. Currently I am working with children with special needs at an Islamic school in Northwood on Saturdays. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, reading, weight training and teaching young children about religion.

As governor at East Acton Primary I enjoy being part of a team that is committed to the progress and betterment of the school. It feels like a great responsibility but also a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated group of people. I would like nothing more than to see the school grow from strength to strength in the coming months and years.

Lucy Cohen - Co-opted Governor

I joined the Governing Board at East Acton Primary School in December 2019 after working in primary education for over 20 years as a teacher, Deputy Head and Head teacher.  In my professional life, I now work as a child counsellor in various schools, supporting children to express their emotions using a range of art materials.  My main interests outside work include spending time with my friends and family, cooking, reading and completing mosaics.  I also enjoy teaching mosaic making to children which I do every summer at a holiday camp.  I'm delighted to be part of the Governing Board at East Acton and look forward to using my experience in the education sector to support the School.

James Perryman - Parent Governor

I have two sons at East Acton Primary.  I decided to become a parent governor to support the hard work the school is already doing and to try to provide an alternative perspective where possible.

I work in Social Housing, in Service Improvement, which involves reviewing policies and working processes.  I hope this experience will help at East Acton Primary.  Outside of work I am also a keen musician and once played at Sydney Opera House.  I think encouraging children to grow and develop in the arts and their personal expression is really important.
